Shelter is something we all need.
Shelter covers us…protects us…hides us.
Shelter keeps us safe when the storms of life come…
And we all have storms.
The thing about shelter though is that it only works if you’re in it.
You can have the greatest source of shelter in the world, but it will do nothing to protect you unless you’re under it.
Imagine for a second that you’re on a deserted island with no shelter.
You see a storm building out on the water, and you think to yourself, “I need shelter.”
So, you build a shelter.
Then the storm comes…
And, you decide to sleep on the beach instead.
You have a perfectly good shelter and you don’t use it.
Now, think of God as your shelter.
He is your shelter actually…in fact, He’s the greatest source of shelter ever.
But, just like that shelter on the island, He’s not going to cover you and protect you when the storms of life come if you’re not under Him…if you’re not close to Him.
What’s your shelter when the storms come?
Your money & possessions?
Your status & reputation?
We can hide behind a lot of things in life.
We can make lots of things our shelter on this earth.
But nothing on this earth is going to last…none of the earthly shelters you’ve built will protect you in the end.
You may believe that God exists.
You may think that you know Him.
But, if you don’t make Him your shelter…
If you don’t depend on Him as your only hope for protection…
If you don’t submit yourself to Him and live every day under His care…
He won’t protect you.
Kind of like that shelter you built on the deserted island…
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.“
Psalms 91:1-2 & 14-15 (NLT)
