Playing Hide & Seek With God

hide and seek title

Hide & Seek.

I’ve played a LOT of Hide & Seek in my lifetime…

And, as I think back to the games I’ve played, one thing sticks out in my memory.

It’s that moment when the person counting yells “Ready or not, here I come!”…

And I’m not ready.

Know the feeling?

As a kid, you probably did what I did and either yelled back for more time or quickly scrambled just to hide yourself somewhere.

I hated that feeling.

I always wanted to be ready…that was the point of the game.

And, I think that’s the point of being a Christian too.

We need to be ready when Jesus returns.

The Bible (even Jesus Himself for that matter) makes it clear that the “game” is on.

Only the stakes of this “game” are a whole lot higher than any game of Hide & Seek you’ve ever played.

Somewhere, Jesus is counting, and He’s waiting for the Father to say “Go!”

And, at that moment, there won’t be the option to yell for more time or even scramble to hide yourself.

You’ll either be ready…or not.

44 You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.  Matthew 24:44 (NLT)

What God Says When the Storms Come

storms title

Shelter.

Shelter is something we all need.

Shelter covers us…protects us…hides us.

Shelter keeps us safe when the storms of life come…

And we all have storms.

The thing about shelter though is that it only works if you’re in it.

You can have the greatest source of shelter in the world, but it will do nothing to protect you unless you’re under it.

Imagine for a second that you’re on a deserted island with no shelter.

You see a storm building out on the water, and you think to yourself, “I need shelter.”

So, you build a shelter.

Then the storm comes…

And, you decide to sleep on the beach instead.

You have a perfectly good shelter and you don’t use it.

Now, think of God as your shelter.

He is your shelter actually…in fact, He’s the greatest source of shelter ever.

But, just like that shelter on the island, He’s not going to cover you and protect you when the storms of life come if you’re not under Him…if you’re not close to Him.

What’s your shelter when the storms come?

Your career?

Your money & possessions?

Your 401K?

Your status & reputation?

Your family?

Your accomplishments?

Your education?

We can hide behind a lot of things in life.

We can make lots of things our shelter on this earth.

But nothing on this earth is going to last…none of the earthly shelters you’ve built will protect you in the end.

You may believe that God exists.

You may think that you know Him.

But, if you don’t make Him your shelter…

If you don’t depend on Him as your only hope for protection…

If you don’t submit yourself to Him and live every day under His care…

He won’t protect you.

Kind of like that shelter you built on the deserted island…

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.

Psalms 91:1-2 & 14-15 (NLT)

Why You Need Courage Today

courage title

Courage.

When I think of the word “courage” I tend to think of big, life-changing moments.

The kind of moments that make headlines or get you medals.

The kind of moments that alter your life forever…

But, what about today?

Is courage really only something you need for the big moments?

What if you’re life doesn’t have a whole lot of headline-making, medal-earning moments?

What if today is just another day?

You still need courage.

Let me ask you this…

When is it the hardest for you to be courageous when it comes to your faith in God?

Today…right?

(At work, at school, in your neighborhood, wherever you go…)

Every day, you have choices to make that require courage.

Do I trust God right now in this moment?

Am I going to compromise right now in this moment?

Am I going to give in to my fears right now in this moment?

Am I going to stand up for my faith right now in this moment?

You may not have a lifetime of big, life-changing moments to look back on, but you will have a lifetime of every-day choices.

And those are the choices that will define you in the end…

Those are moments you need courage for today.

9 “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  (Joshua 1:9)
